Grand Festival of Sail 2011

Round Pond, Kensington Gardens, London.

This event was to celebrate the Centenary of the Model Yacht Association, the Silver Jubilee of the Vintage Model Yacht Group and the 135th year of the Model Yacht Association who are the club which uses the Round Pond.

This was our principal event of 2011, it bought together an amazing array of large, beautiful yachts, which were arranged in rows. Each for a separate decade, starting from pre-1900. There were significant boats in every decade with all of the classes being well represented. From the large 10-Tonners from the 1880s to the modern small Footies.
Hearty thanks to all who contributed, especially Graham Frazer and his team at the Model Yacht Sailing Association, Kensington, Secretary Alistair Roach for being the organisational hub, Roger and Peter Stollery for a whole string of Marbleheads and the odd gazebo tent or two as well as Turning Pole editor Martin Bandey for an entire horsebox full of wonderful early yachts.
It has been decided to retain this time of year for our principal sailing day again to avoid the risk of weed; so next year’s date is 16 September 2012….book the slot in your diaries now!
